Everything You Need to Know about Yuka

What is the Yuka APP?

Every day we have customers coming into our store phone in hand and ready to scan our products.

Even in our Sussex countryside town, the Yuka App is going viral. We have heard that now oncologists and consultants are recommending that their patients check all products to ensure they are “safe” to use by scanning with Yuka before they purchase.

This is proving to be a total shock for many. A few days ago, a customer told me that she had checked all the products in her bathroom and most of them which are brands that she has been using for years (and very expensive “so I thought they were the best”) all scored bad, thus she was compelled to throw them away. She explained that she was left feeling deceived by the brand that she had thought was safe and clean to use. She had then gone on to check her daughter’s products and was devastated to see that most of them were red and “Bad”

How does Yuka work?

This simple app is free to use. Once downloaded you can scan the bar code of any skincare or cosmetics product. The app analyses the ingredients of the product and then gives it an instant rating. The score will range from Bad (0-25) to Excellent (75-100).  Good will score (50 to 75) and Poor will score (20 to 50).

Once you have your score you can then make more informed decisions on the products you are buying.

The Yuka app is not just for skincare and cosmetics but also for scanning food items which is useful in understanding labelling in food. All too often processed foods we consider to be healthy are unhealthy UPFs and should be avoided, Yuka will help to demonstrate this.

Does Yuka consider pesticides in its scoring?

The app does not take pesticides into account as these are not referenced or listed on labels. The safest way to avoid harmful pesticides in your food or skincare is to purchase organic.

Can Yuka be relied upon?

Yuka provides a score based on ingredients; however, it does not base this score on how much of the hazardous ingredient has been used in the product. Even if a tiny amount of a dangerous ingredient is used the App will grade the product bad.

Yuka was launched in France in 2017 to help consumers make better choices for their health. In 2022 Yuka was launched in the US and Canada and is now available in 12 countries with over 55 million users which is more than Deliveroo, the app is going from strength to strength clearly consumers globally want more information about what they are putting on their skin and the foods that they are eating.
